biography

The Big David's Band, a group of fifteen musicians from the Drôme (south-east of France), gives you the chance to show off your dance moves, and swing your body to the beat.

The Band set up around 12 years ago in a Music School and has since evolved to form an association under the 1901 law. Its main activity is, of course, playing music and providing its listeners with a varied repertoire at its numerous gigs. However, the BDB is much more than that... It also regularly organises artistic, sports and gourmet events, to name but a few... The group is original in that it mixes, in a fun and friendly environment, amateurs (from all walks of life) and members of the music profession (music teachers, performers, music students...). The enthusiasm of the first group combined with the skills of the second leads to a recipe for success.

Rehearsals are held each week in Peyrins, a small village in the Drôme (75 km from Lyons, 50 km from Grenoble), in the local Music School that has kindly let us practise there for several years.

David Mouillon, clarinettist and leader of the Big David's Band, is also a secondary school music teacher and sound engineer at the "Cordonnerie", a contemporary music section within the Conservatoire in Romans. The group follows the example of the post-war Big Bands, and is made up of a rhythm section (guitar, bass, drums), five wind sections (brass and woodwind) with alto and tenor saxophones, trumpets, trombones and clarinets (each section has an average of three musicians) and a brilliant singer. From time to time, we also feature guest stars (in particular on the sax, Hammond organ or Fender Rhodes).

The repertoire, chosen by all of the musicians, includes well-known jazz standards, and also explores some bossa-nova, rhythm 'n' blues, rock 'n' roll, and some astounding and innovative adaptations of French songs.

As well as conventional concerts, the Big David's Band has performed several times at functions or surprise gigs for wedding receptions, artists' exhibitions or commercial events, and other gatherings (June Music Festival, Telethon, Mayor's New Year greetings, etc...), in jazz clubs and during its various tours in 2005 and 2007 in the South-East of Italy.

The Big David's Band performs around twenty gigs each year from September to early July.
